The urban park of the Santa Lucia Hill is the future of the first urbanistic planning project of Santiago de Chile, formulated in 1872 by the Intendant of the city, Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna. This first plan denominated Plan of Improvements of the Capital inspires him in the widening projects of engineers Ildefonso Cerda for the city of Barcelona and Carlos María de Castro for Madrid (1859 and 1860, respectivally), and in the projects of urban improvement que is executed in Paris by Eugene Haussmann, in 1860. The trips that in many opportunities Vicuña takes throughout the european continent those same years, allow him to meet in terrain and first hand the urban projects that are executed in these and other cities. Before its landscape transformation, the Santa Lucia Hill was a naked rock, garbage dump, a shelter of outlaw, cementery and military force (in this same order) and not very different of the image that is shown by the White Hill, situated in the north cuadrant of the city. Eighteen thousand carts of vegetable land changed it radically from its original aspect, making it the most interesting rock of urban walks in the city of Santiago de Chile. There is something existent of its original trace, of its circular geometry, which registers closeness with the line of the athenian acropolis, also installed over a rock. This closeness is not only related with the vertical order that the hill places over the plain and horizontal design of the city, of bigger importance than the other typographical signs to make the perimeter of the urban hability of the valley. The closeness with the Acropolis, which are not found in the original design of 1873, were acquired throughout time and of the spatial order that incorporate the different arquitectural pieces of the Santa Lucia Hill. But, this is for now just a hypothesis, that requires investigation hoping to identify the conceptual handle which gives us a simple look. El parque urbano del cerro Santa Lucía es el fruto del primer plan de ordenamiento urbanístico de Santiago de Chile, formulado el año 1872 por el intendente de la ciudad, Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna . Este primer plan denominado Plan de Mejoras de la Capital, se inspira en los proyectos de ensanche de los ingenieros Ildefonso Cerda para la ciudad de Barcelona y Carlos María de Castro para Madrid (1859 y 1860, respectivamente), y en las obras de mejora urbana que ejecuta en París el prefecto Eugenio Haussmann, a partir del año 1860. Los viajes que en diversas oportunidades realiza Vicuña por el continente europeo por esos mismos años, le permiten conocer en terreno y de primera mano las obras urbanas que se ejecutan en estas y otras ciudades. Antes de su transformación paisajística, el cerro Santa Lucía era un desnudo peñon rocoso, vertedero de basura, guarida de forajidos, cementerio y fortaleza militar (así en este mismo orden) y no muy diferente a la imagen que hoy nos muestra el cerro Blanco, situado en el cuadrante norte de la ciudad. Dieciocho mil carros de tierra vegetal le cambiaron radicalmente su aspecto original, haciendo del peñón el más interesante de los paseos urbanos que posee la ciudad de Santiago de Chile. Existe algo de su traza original, de su geometría circular, en fin, que registra cercanías con la traza de la acrópolis ateniense, también instalada ésta sobre un peñon rocoso. Estas cercanías no sólo se encuentran emparentadas con el orden vertical que impone el cerro sobre la traza plana y horizontal de la ciudad, de mayor rotundidad que las de los otros signos topográficos que configuran el perímetro de la habitabilidad urbana del valle. Las cercanías con la Acrópolis, que no se encuentran presentes en la traza original de 1873, se fueron adquiriendo a través del tiempo y de los órdenes espaciales que incorporaron las diferentes obras arquitectónicas del cerro Santa Lucía. Pero, ésta es por ahora solamente una hipótesis, que requiere de investigaciones con el fin identificar otros asideros conceptuales a los que nos proporciona una simple mirada.
